FELT PAINTING: “PARALLEL UNIVERSE”

An expressionist work that depicts the reality i inhabit. Larger handmade felt which has been cut down after 1,500 hand rollings to create the fabric. The piece contains Australian Merino wool i hand dye each summer, along with Angelina and viscose fibres.

The felting consists of three layers of hand dyed Merino roving (19 micron count) with top embellishments of viscose roving which has fractured and branched out during the 1500 hand rollings required to make this piece.

There is no wastage in this design.  All cut off side pieces are added to the spare stash.

i purchased some more metallic embroidery floss and have branched out into the variegated floss as well.  i have more in my floss stash.

i have turned this piece around for ease of access across all areas of the felt though the finished piece will be long from the top down.  Does not matter which way i place any art work, once i work out which direction the piece will hang, i cannot change the design and any other way the work is presented will not look right at all.

Central part of the design process already commenced.  This is a highly negotiable part of design as i have to work out the main focal pieces and all the other layers involved.  In a way, i have to think in layers like when using Photoshop on the computer.  Felt work involves cerebral Photoshop principles and is quite difficult to achieve without practice.  If art was easy, anyone would do it.

The pieces of felt will each house a bead woven facetted glass cabochon as part of the design.  This means the finished work will need to be framed up in a box frame due to the raised bead work planned.

There will be considerable bead embroidery and free form hand embroidery on this design for a completely over the top end result

The third element of my felt paintings is added embellishment with dry needle felting techniques. This always occurs before the final embroidery layer.

Below: Completed work, both unframed and after framing. Framed size is 49 centimetres across by 75 centimetres down. The work has been professionally framed under non reflective glass in a box frame style arrangement.

“Parallel Universe” is available from my studio for $1200. Courier costs are extra. An original work of art displaying wet felting, dry needle felting, free form embroidery and bead weaving with cabochon focals.

This felt painting is accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity. i only make one of a kind in my studio. The painting backing holds the story and meaning behind this painting.
